An 8-week meditation course for all levels$250 for 8 weeks, 16 hours of class
Mondays, Sept. 18th to Oct. 30th, 7 to 9pm at Float North, 1617 NE 17th Avenue In person only This course is a direct path application of the central teaching of all the great wisdom traditions. Through this course, we invite attention to discover the immediate, universal reality of our conscious presence, accessible here-and-now, always. We also explore all aspects of our being: how we relate to our sensory perceptions, body, thoughts, emotions, and personality (including its shadow elements). Each class will have a flow of personal sharing, instruction, and experiential learning through various yogic practices. Mindfulness is integral to our practice: “Open, non-judgmental awareness of what is arising”. The training trajectory in mindfulness is a progressive path that usually is quite gradual. Know Thyself Meditation is a direct path. Direct paths ask right away: Who and what is this awareness? This inquiry leads directly to the experience of Know Thyself. The practices we do together are designed for people with busy lives. With loving curiosity, we start to notice our attention during our day to day activities. As our awareness grows, we focus each week on another aspect of mindfulness (listed below). At home, you'll be asked to do some writing about it (5 minutes daily) and explore various yogic practices (breath-work, body scans, and meditation). The time spent doing sitting practices each day is between 10 and 20 minutes. The real "training ground" is in our daily lives, integrating our experiences into what is happening here and now. A participant shares: "One take away from this course is that good people coming together in the quest for self understanding, learning, and using tools/techniques for cultivating greater sensitivity and awareness is AMAZING - it felt super supportive. Riding the waves of thought, emotion, sensation, breath, and experience can be overwhelming at times and yet there is an inner stillness and peace that can be thoughtfully nurtured and extended from the eye of the storm to guide the process of surfing those waves." |

Katherine Murcott says this about the course: "When Elizabeth asked if I would like to participate in this class, I was excited by the opportunity to gather with others who share my interest in meditation. I have studied and enjoyed various forms of meditation practice throughout my life. As a mother of two young children, however, I had not pursued meditation practice in a group setting for a very long time. With Elizabeth's in person and online guidance, I felt safe and honored as she invited our group to experience a range of simple yet profound meditation practices, both formal and informal. I feel her course is beneficial for beginning and experienced meditators, as it provides a supportive atmosphere in which to amplify the restorative effects of meditation such as cultivating mindful self-awareness and inner calm. Through this class, I was also reminded that it is possible to navigate, with intention, toward feelings of deeper connection to myself and others. Thank you, Elizabeth, for offering and creating an opportunity for meaningful transformation." |
About Elizabeth's Meditation Journey
I'm a preachers kid. I was a seeker from the start, but couldn't find what I was looking for at church. When I moved to Portland at age 17 to study world religions and music at Lewis and Clark College, my professor recommended that I meet Gurumayi Chidvilasananda. At age 19, I travelled to India to study and I met her for the first time. I had a profound heart opening and a rich, healing journey began which I couldn't comprehend at that time. After getting my BA in Religious Studies in 1990, I continued seeking the Truth that lead to years of practicing and teaching chanting and meditation at the local Siddha Yoga Meditation center here in Portland. The center later closed, and I continued my own practice, but it felt dry. I had always focused on chanting as my main practice, but longed to go deeper into meditation. A few years later, I met Devaji, (David Waldman) and spent years sitting with his community here in Portland and later at Mt. Shasta. The love was immense, and the path of meditation was somewhat clearer, but I still felt unable to fully integrate it into my daily life with two kids, two jobs, two cats and a wife!
When I met Jim and Kimberly Carson, I was thrilled to finally find a meditation path that combined informal practices in daily life, with formal practices. I became a certified Know Thyself Meditation teacher during the pandemic and now offer 5 or 8 week classes. I hope that you will join us on this journey of self-exploration, compassion, and love!
